Installing LVP in Victoria BC
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring is a popular choice for Victoria homeowners due to its durability, waterproof properties, and ease of installation. Whether you're planning a DIY project or hiring a professional, this guide will help you understand the installation process.
Why LVP is Perfect for Victoria Homes
Victoria's climate, with its moderate temperatures and occasional humidity, makes LVP an ideal flooring choice:
- Waterproof construction handles moisture from ground floors and basements
- Resistant to temperature fluctuations common in Victoria
- Works well with radiant floor heating systems
- Low maintenance for busy households
- Durable enough for high-traffic areas
Pre-Installation Checklist
Before you begin installing LVP, make sure you have:
- Proper Subfloor: Clean, dry, and level surface (within 3/16 inch over 10 feet)
- Acclimation: Allow flooring to sit in the room for 48 hours before installation
- Tools: Tape measure, utility knife, tapping block, pull bar, spacers
- Underlayment: Optional but recommended for sound reduction and moisture protection
- Expansion Gaps: Leave 1/4 inch gap around all walls and fixed objects
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Subfloor
Remove old flooring, baseboards, and any obstacles. Clean the subfloor thoroughly and check for level. Repair any dips or high spots. For concrete subfloors, ensure they're completely dry and free of moisture.
2. Install Underlayment (Optional)
Roll out foam underlayment, overlapping seams by 2-3 inches. Tape seams securely. Underlayment helps with sound reduction, moisture protection, and provides a smoother surface.
3. Plan Your Layout
Start from the longest, straightest wall. Measure the room width and calculate how many full planks will fit. If the last row will be less than 3 inches wide, adjust your starting row to make the last row wider.
4. Install the First Row
Place spacers along the starting wall. Install the first plank with the tongue facing the wall. Use a tapping block and mallet to ensure tight connections. Continue across the first row, cutting the last plank to fit.
5. Continue Installation
Stagger planks by at least 6 inches between rows. Use the click-lock system to connect planks at an angle, then press down. Work row by row across the room.
6. Cut Around Obstacles
For doorways, pipes, and other obstacles, measure carefully and cut planks to fit. Use a jigsaw or utility knife for precise cuts. Maintain expansion gaps around all fixed objects.
7. Install Final Row and Baseboards
Measure and cut the final row to fit, leaving expansion gap. Remove spacers and install baseboards or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap.
Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid
- Not allowing flooring to acclimate before installation
- Installing on an uneven or dirty subfloor
- Forgetting expansion gaps around perimeter
- Not staggering planks properly (creating weak spots)
- Forcing planks together (can damage locking mechanism)
- Installing in rooms with excessive moisture without proper preparation
When to Hire a Professional
While LVP installation is DIY-friendly, consider hiring a professional if:
- Your subfloor needs significant leveling or repair
- You have complex room layouts or many obstacles
- You're installing over radiant heating systems
- You don't have the time or tools for DIY installation
